The weekend just passed ruined me. The destructocast was a massive success, even if we didn’t quite finish the best of the series of games we attacked.
As a result, this week’s F.A.P. is going to be a short one on Max Payne 3.
I have a massive tolerance for third person shooters. I will play any old shit and actually really enjoy it.
Max Payne 3 is ghastly; a long and painful slog through some of the worst cover shooting this side of Quantum Theory.
The storyline is a bore too. Max is miserable without any of the humour of the original two games. I think it is a testament to Remedy’s writing team that they were able to toe the line between the tongue-in-cheek and tragedy whereas Rockstar just delve into morose and rip off Man on Fire, badly.
Anyway, this minute was the only good bit in the game:

At first, I thought it was a very plain floor in some kind of Max Payne 1 throwback.
As someone that found Max Payne 2 a bit too serious compared to 1, I think I'll skip 3. It's not like I can think of a single box it ticks for me that Vanquish couldn't tick harder.
There is one bit on Alan Wake where they show the guy who does Max Payne's face it was the best bit in the game (spoilers: there are some other really good bits).
Max Payne 3 really wants to be a depressing slog, but there are other games that do this better and more convincingly.
Vanquish ticks every box, hard.
