Super Hexagon #2

Review: Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon #1

SONGS OF INNOCENCE

A new game from Terry Cavanagh, launching at 69p and available on Android – the platform upon which I’m slowly assembling a small library of decent games?

Don’t mind if I do, Super Hexagon.

Oh my. What a charming package you look. The bold, simple gradients and colours – yes, this is reminescent of Cavanagh’s previous titles.

I think I’m going to enjoy this.

I’ll start on the first stage. A touch suspicious that it’s labelled ‘Hard’, but this is a game by the man who made VVVVVV, a platform game only out fuck-with-you’d by Super Meat Boy, I Wanna Be The Guy and those Super Mario Bros mods made by sociopaths.

I wouldn’t expect Super Hexagon to be easy. Ha ha! That would be stupid.

Shaun, hilarious stuff. This sounds like my Super Gravitron experience. I eventually quit that with only a pathetic time to my name.

Thanks Joel. I am determined to 'finish' at least one level.

Fortunately the music is great, which invites me back to try again and again and again.

P.S. anyone who plays this: look at who is sat at the top of the world leaderboards, mocking us.

I'll second Joel: hilarious stuff. Next to HM Jr's definitive review of Portal 2 this is now the definitive review of Super Hexagon for me. I was with you every second of the way there Shaun.

You remember me saying I had wide-screen thumbs? Well Super Hexagon doesn't work on the Nexus 7 (there seems to be some sort of undefeatable lag preventing Cavanagh from releasing a compatible version) so I had to start playing it on my girlfriend's Huawei G300. I'd start with my thumbs expertly placed in the outer lower corners of the screen for maximum visibility but as my focus narrowed on the game I'd forget about the positioning of my thumbs and encroach on the screen or drift outwards hitting the back or home buttons. Not good when you're about to beat a score. I've since bought it on Steam and managed to beat Hard. Let me tell you, playing on a keyboard is easier (WASD or cursor keys) but your eye movements are a lot more severe with the bigger screen!

I'm honoured to be counted among such ranks! Uh, rank.

I can only imagine how dry my eyes would go were eye to play this on a big screen, but I can see it being easier – very easy to overswing on a touchscreen.

We get the best spam. As it turns out.

  4. […] Super Hexagon (2012): Devilishly difficult and addictive, but pure elegance and simplicity itself. Not unlike Cavanagh’s previous VVVVVV. By far my favourite review of it was by ShaunCG over at Arcadian Rhythms. […]
