AR Podcast #4: That’s All of the Dogs Ever

AR podcast featured

The Arcadian Rhythms podcast returns once more, and in a rather more timely fashion. It’s brought flowers and chocolates and adolescent awkwardness, along with quite a lot of hope for its fourth date. How far will it go?

Featuring:

  • An audio test that actually became quite interesting, as we ended up talking about Deus Ex: Human Revolutions and Conan in the context of replaying games.
  • AJ wails on Max Anarchy, the follow-up to Mad World, and breaks its teeth.
  • A brief introduction to Introversion (yes, another one: for the benefit of those who missed the first cast).
  • Shaun gets coquettish with Uplink, and AJ and Dylan are jealous of his new girlfriend, Miss Pee Cee Games.
  • Dylan talks about Dust, James obsesses about furries, Shaun starts talking about dogs and Jolly Rover, and everyone agrees that spaniels are “well fit”.
  • The dystopian possible future of videogame consoles is discussed, and disagreements around special editions ensue. At this point everyone is pretty steamed.
  • Blooper bonus: let us ruin your childhood with talk of Thundercats.

Games mentioned:

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution (though not by name)
  • Otogi: Myth of demons
  • Conan
  • Anarchy Reigns
  • Golden Axe: Beast Rider
  • God Hand
  • Spikeout: Battlestreet
  • Uplink (and all Introversion games as a result)
  • Jolly Rover
  • Dust: An Elysian Tale
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

The podcast can be subscribed to on iTunes via this link. Alternatively you can still listen to it using the player below.

If you have any feedback to contribute it will be gratefully and graciously received.

Apologies for any background audio in this case – it was recorded before the 3rd ‘cast was posted so the only feedback I’ve been able to integrate is via the medium of my limited audio editing skills. Which also explains any odd pops in the audio. We are learning.

    Solid editing there sir.

I had forgotten the Good Will hunting bit. That is what happens when you have one too many bitter shandies.

"One too many bitter shandies" = AR podcast #5.

And thanks! Probably 4 hours of editing all told in this one. There are some things I'm less happy about (moments where you can tell a snip was made) but I'm getting better at it. I'm now in the habit of recognising the waveform of "um".

i find that i like podcasts more and more, reading is so old school, and i can play a game while listening.
    – thinking back on uplink it reminds me a bit of ftl in how it plays but it's been a while so i could be wrong. I find uplink always a bit funny because you basically play someone who "real" hackers would describe as script kiddy. The story is good but is basically a short quest to end the game.
    – Ubisoft anounced that they stopped their always on drm. Didn't you hear about this? Am i imagining things?
    – i thought i was the only one who remembered/knew about fur fighters. But i didn't get if you just mockingly mentioned it because of the furries stuff earlier. Because i like it and played the demo to death. When i got my hands on the full game it was too late and looked too old. Maybe i should go back to it, but i think that about 'oni' too all the time. Amazing how much of my favourite games are third person action games yet the only console i have is a ps2.

Ubisoft have announced that they are giving up on that, yes. That happened pretty recently though.

As for Fur Fighters, being a die-hard Dreamcast fan means that I follow any development on titles that started there. I found the PS2 version for about a pound in my local CEX. It hasn't aged all that well but I am curious to see what the ex-Bizarre Creation guys do with the license on the iPhone.

      Hello again!

You're right about Uplink; what you're actually doing as a player is comparable to script kiddie stuff. You're not writing any programs yourself or examining any code. But as an abstracted gameplay mechanic it's really effective and engaging (and I think more involving than what Dylan suggested, which is basically http://hackertyper.net ).

Ubisoft did indeed make that announcement but it pre-dated our recording of this podcast. Future 'casts should emerge more promptly now that I've got some editing experience under my belt. :)

I've not played Fur Fighters myself but just before recording this podcast AJ gave me a copy for PS2, so I look forward to checking it out. I don't think anyone was knocking Fur Fighters – it seems to be a rather fondly remembered cult classic among the DC contingent. Unless, hmm, perhaps Dreamcast fans are all furries? It's not impossible…

Under Defeat: back then AND today I cannot even enjoy it at ANY difficulty once I reach in Stage 2.

But I really want to enjoy it. It's so pretty and fluid and the explosions are awesome… it's just… so… damn… HARD.

Yeah, the special edition unlocks a ton of new vehicles that handle very differently and it is worth going back and trying out some of them. I've barely scraped past stage 2 myself.
